For a Beautiful Healthy Home – The Organo line from Kirei is elegant contemporary furniture for everyday living. Each of the materials in this product is selected with care to reduce stress on our natural resources and eliminate toxic emissions in our homes.

Kirei is a Japanese word signifying many meanings, including Clean, Pure, Truthful and Beautiful. Kirei uses recycled products and efficient practices to reduce their overall impact on natural resources and the environment. Each of Kirei’s products uses reclaimed, non-toxic materials to lessen their impact on natural resources and contribute to a clean, healthy indoor environment.

Reclaimed Materials – Kirei Board is manufactured from reclaimed agricultural fiber from the Sorghum plant grown around the world for food. The stalks of this plant are usually burned or thrown into landfills after harvest. By using them in the production of Kirei Board, this material is removed from the waste stream, reducing landfill need and air pollution, while giving rural farmers a new source of revenue from a previously unused waste material. Minimal amounts of wood are used as bonding strips, greatly reducing the need for newly harvested wood for building.

Low-VOC Emissions – Formaldehyde has been shown to be harmful indoor air pollutant present in high levels in many indoor spaces. Using Kirei Board and low-VOC finishes helps reduce these formaldehyde emissions and contribute to a healthier indoor environment. Kirei Board emits only trace amounts of naturally occurring formaldehyde existing in all organic materials. The KR Bond adhesive used in the manufacture of Kirei Board does not emit any formaldehyde into the ambient indoor atmosphere.

Kirei and LEED – Kirei Board is made from rapidly renewable, reclaimed agricultural fiber, with a low-VOC emission adhesive. While LEED does not certify materials, kirei board can help your projects gain credit toward LEED certification.

Ecotainer Cups

Ecotainer Cups

A cup made from renewable resources that leaves a smaller environmental footprint. Ecotainer is a product line of BPI certified compostable packaging designed for beverages and take-out food. The cups are both paper hot cups and paper cold cups.

Unlike traditional packaging, ecotainer uses a plastic lining made from plants. All products are compostable under commercial composting conditions.

Quantities:
- Sleeves contain 50 Cups except for the 20 oz which has 25 cups per sleeve
- Case contains 1000 Cups except for the 20 oz which has 500 cups

This is the first of what we hope will be many steps toward a more sustainable future. Globally, many brand owners have chosen to make a difference by switching to these products and you should too! More than 650 million ecotainer cups and containers have replaced other single use packaging made of foam, plastic and the standard polyethlene coated paper products.

BPI Certified – ecotainer received certification from the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) on August 4, 2006. BPI is an independent organization that reviews and certifies products as meeting ASTM D6400 specifications for compostability.

Would You Like Paper or Plastic? How About Neither?

BuyGreen Reusable Shopping Bag

BuyGreen Reusable Shopping Bag

The on going war over paper and plastic has met its match.  Paper and plastic bags stand at a tie, being both extremely inefficient.  It takes more energy to produce paper bags than plastic but making paper bags requires a lot of water and obviously trees.  Plastic bags are made from 12 million barrels of oil that could potentially make its way into large bodies of water and harm marine life.  So what’s the answer to our problem? Reusable bags of course!  They’re more durable and they’re easier to carry.  You can leave them in your car or near the door so that it is easy to grab before jetting out the door to buy groceries. Doing something as simple are using reusable bags for shopping helps our environment tremendously.  It takes as much petroleum to make 14 plastic bags as it does to drive a mile in a car.  The obvious choice is going green and it takes little to no effort at all to start to living more eco-friendly.

Plastic Water Bottle Waste

The bottled water industry is booming!  In the U.S. we use 1.5 million barrels of oil each year to create plastic water bottles alone.  Of the billions of plastic water bottles being used, only 12% are recycled.  The other 88% ends up in landfills, roads, rivers, and waterways. So what’s the answer ? Reduce your use of bottled water and bring your own water from home in a reusable bottle.  Scared of tap water?  Consider that municipal water supplies are checked diligently for safety while water bottlers operate with little to no oversight.  There are also many great water filtration systems available today, priced to accommodate any budget, and a variety of quality, stylish water bottles.  With additional concerns about the safety of plastics and potential leaching of toxic chemicals like bisphenol-A (BPA) into our beverages, we say “just say no” to plastic bottles.

Save money too!  A reusable water bottle is a one-time expense.  If you replace just one plastic water bottle per day, you would save about $200 per year.

Plus, aren’t they just so darn cute?  Styles for the entire family :)

SIGG 1.0 Water Bottle

Tip:  Fill up our SIGG bottles in the evening and put them in the refrigerator overnight.  When we take them out in the morning to go in the car with us or send to school with our kids, the water stays cold almost all day – with no “plastic” taste.

Earth Friendly Packaging

Once you have found your eco-friendly gift, all that is left is to wrap your gift without waste.  A thoughtful and unique technique is using magazines or scraps around the house.  For example, if you have a gardener friend recipient, find a Home and Garden magazine lying around and decorate your gift with different clippings of flowers.  If you have an old subway map being unused, cut it down to size and wrap up anything (I find it perfect for shoe boxes).  Creative, thoughtful, and fun, while reducing your carbon footprint at the same time.

Don’t read magazines or use the subway?  Not a problem; Dunwoody Both Packaging has a variety  of boxes, bags, tissue, ribbons, labels and so much more earth-friendly products for any occasion.  Your friends and family will automatically know to use these lovely bags to show it off because they’re that loveable.

Their plastic bag line is made of oxo-biodegradable plastic. Their ribbon line consists of many made in the USA, and 100% cotton products. Last but not least, their printed labels offers 100% recycled paper stock, water based inks, and non-bleached liners.  Everything needed to at the finishing touches to the perfect eco-friendly gift.

Which is Worse? Driving a Hummer or Using Fluffy Toilet Paper?

Hummer SUVs are known for guzzling gas and being detrimental to the environment but could you ever think that the consumption of toilet paper was worse?  The American people are obsessed with extra-soft, quilted and multi-ply to wipe.  In comparison to all other parts of the world, our toilet paper usage is extremely significant beyond comparison.

It is said that more than 98% of all toilet paper sold here comes from virgin wood.  I don’t believe we have enough trees to support this extravagant habit to wipe our butts. In Europe and Latin America, up to 40% of toilet paper comes from recycled products.  Over all, our disposable paper habits must change for the good of our environment.  We could start by purchasing recycled toilet paper.  It does the job and moves the world closer to a better environment.
